A report of the World Peace Service on Clay Hill Green, Epsom - Peace Prayers report 2011.
A lit lantern carrying the flame of peace was encircled by the faithful. Twenty five stood on Clay Hill Green.
Our tenth year amongst the pines that were planted back in 2001. On October 23rd at 3.00 pm Clay Hill Green was in a windy Autumn setting bathed in sunlight reflecting a golden hue onto the landscape.
Adrian Esdaile led the prayers, John Padwick read a passage from Matthew’s gospel, and many contributed with their own readings and prayers during service.
Individual prayers were offered culminating in the St Francis of Assisi Prayer and a special message that was sent by him on this day. We all joined in unity as we made the blessing.
Deep peace of the running Wave to you
Deep peace of the flowing Air to you
Deep peace of the Quiet earth to you
Deep peace of the shining Stars to you
Deep peace of the son of Peace to you.
A
message of greeting from The College of Saint Francis of Assisi was readPhotographs were taken of us sharing our friendship together.
Good news was shared to all present about the fact that permission had been granted for a Peace flame pathway similar to the one in The Hague, to be built in the grounds of St Pancras Church London.
This is to be solar powered, and rocks would be placed along the pathway to represent each country. However £40,000 has to be raised for this to be finalised.
We pray that progress will be made.
Refreshments were at Christ Church hall consisting of tea and coffee with cakes donated by the representatives of the Bahia’s group.
Amongst our friends from all over Epsom there were visitors from afar. One had come from Australia.
Everybody was glad for the opportunity to meet and pray together.

The World Peace Flame
The World Peace Flame is a symbol of peace, unity, freedom and celebration. We believe in the essential freedom of the human spirit to create peace at any time under any circumstances – a view endorsed by the millions of people who have lit The World Peace Flame as a symbol of this dream.
The World Peace Flame is dedicated to achieving peace through a process of education and the practical support of grassroots peace initiatives. We aim to inspire people everywhere that the individual plays a crucial role in creating peace at every level. Our dream is as simple as it is ambitious: to light an eternally burning World Peace Flame in every major city or decision-making centre in the world. It is a dream we’ve cherished since 1999 when we created our first Flames of Peace on five continents around the world.

PRAYERS FOR PEACE, 2009 - Sunday, 18th October, at 3 pm
Thirty two people of Epsom gathered on Clayhill Green, West Hill, Epsom to pray for peace on 18th October 2009. This is a spot where three pine trees have been planted 'for peace' and it was the day that ended the Week of Prayer for World Peace.
Those there came from all the local Christian denominations .
The day was perfect and we all felt united in our prayer and our desire for peace in our troubled world. On the service sheet were printed the words of an African traditional prayer:
'May peace reign over the earth ... and every ill word be driven out into the wilderness, into the virgin forest.' If only that prayer could come true in our world today !
The Bethlehem Peace Light shown in the above picture was in the centre of our Prayer circle this was originally organised by a mission - Light into Darkness, for children in need. Since 1986, there has been a great deal of co-operation between many countries to allow the light to travel throughout many European Countries and on to America.
Each year, a child fetches the light from the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus was born. The light is then flown to Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries for use at ecumenical services throughout the Continent, even as far as Epsom!
‘Prayers for Peace’
In the open air
On a cold and very wet afternoon, twenty nine hardy souls gathered in a circle at 3pm on Sunday October 26th on Clayhill Green, West Hill beside the three Stone Pine Trees planted as [Symbols of Peace] by Councillor Petrie in 2001 (trees and plaque shown below).
There were representatives from many of the Epsom Churches. A short service was conducted by Canon Adrian Esdaile (left), and Rev Sue Bull led the singing. it started with the presentation of the Peace Light and An affirmation of the words included in the inauguration of the Peace Flame Pathway in the Hague when Ambassadors from every country in the world stated:- and we said -
"We are convinced that peace is not only possible;
it is one of the most urgent needs of our time.
We affirm that every single human being has the right to peace and justice,
and at the same time peace is a responsibility we must all assume.
