“The burden of them is intolerable”
The Language and Spirituality of the Book of Common Prayer.
The Revd Canon Dr Jane Steen, Canon Chancellor at Southwark Cathedral. Her specialist subject is the English Literature of the 17th Century. This year is the 350th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer.

“A Reconstruction of the Last Week of the Life of Jesus”
Revd Canon Adrian Esdaile discusses the events of Holy Week and the exact date of the Crucifixion and the Last Supper, questions that have puzzled scholars for centuries. What are the questions and how do we face up to them? How accurate can we be? Does this intricate and detailed discussion give us fresh insights into the meaning of what Jesus did and help us to understand more deeply the meaning especially of the Last Supper? Is it important?

“Training the Clergy””
The Revd Simon Talbott addresses current trends in clergy training, in particular with respect to being a training incumbent and being involved as a course tutor. He is also a member of the Council of the South East Institute for Theological Education and on the Board of Studies of the Southern Theological Education and Training Scheme (based in Salisbury).

“Love Enclosed -Julian of Norwich”
An exploration of the life and writings of Julian of Norwich through story, song, meditation and original piano pieces. The Revd Dr June Boyce-Tillman, MBE, is Professor of Applied Music at the University of Winchester and an honorary Chaplain to Winchester Cathedral, a composer and a hymn-writer.

“Christa”
The Revd Rosemary Donovan is the Vicar of Christ Church, Epsom. She was ordained in 2001 after a previous career as a Secondary School teacher, and studied at Birmingham University and the ecumenical Queen’s College, Birmingham. Much of her ministry has been with young people both in Kings Heath and Moseley where she was Associate Vicar for 7 years before her appointment at Christ Church. She has a great passion for mission and outreach and a desire to see people reach their full potential in Christ. Consequently she is going to challenge our perceptions of who Jesus is by exploring female images of the divine.

An evening when two members of the St Martin’s congregation share their recently-acquired skills
“First Steps of an Icon Writer”
Rosemary Hall studied part-time at Epsom Art School and has always wanted to be a painter. Her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in the 1970s. She has been a member of the St Martin’s congregation for nearly 50 years. She took up icon “writing” two years ago.
“Embroidery”
Helen Williams learnt all she knew about stitching at the knees of older female relatives. A lecture at Guildford Cathedral in 2009 showed her a new direction for using the skills she acquired subsequently at the Royal School of Needlework. She is currently gaining experience with the Broderers under the belfry at St Paul’s Cathedral

“Calligraphy”
Audrey Simmons started calligraphy on retirement 25 years ago. She will show us the papers used, the inks, the pens, the scripts - and talk about the preparation needed to produce a variety of pieces of work. With her husband, Francis, she has been a member of the St Martin’s congregation for about 4 years.

“Singing Round the Piano”
Lynn Alsop, Glenys Scadden and Sue Hyde choose worship songs old and new and lead us in singing “round the piano”. Maybe one or more of those we sing can become part of our worship

“Interpreting and Contemplating the Bible through Painting”
lain McKillop is an ordained priest and professional artist. ”Inhabiting the Bible”, his recent exhibition in Southwell Minster, explored this theme, lain is Curate of Effingham and Little Bookham and his talk will be illustrated.
Guildford Cathedral has frequently exhibited his paintings. Today is Bible Sunday.

“18th Century Dublin”
Peter Ticher was born and brought up in Dublin. He and his family had a great interest in cultural subjects generally, especially architecture and silver. Dublin in the 18th century was the second city of the British Empire and had three world "firsts" - the first performance of Handel’s Messiah, the first town planning, and the first dedicated maternity hospital. It was also the centre of a group of talented intellectuals, formed around Jonathan Swift, Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and his associates. Peter is a member of the congregation and his talk will be illustrated by “slides”
